Police arrested 269 suspects in a crackdown on technology-enabled fraud. The largest phone-scam loss in the first half of the year involved criminals posing as customer-service officers and persuading a victim to make thirteen bank transfers totaling nearly HK$4 million.
A victim first received an unsolicited call from someone claiming to work for a mobile provider, then was contacted by fake Monetary Authority officers who alleged an account had been frozen. The victim was told to safeguard all assets and ultimately lost more than S$1.1 million.
